RSS (Rich Site Summary, also known as Really Simple Syndication) acts as a site aggregator that publishes updates from your most commonly used websites, blogs, publications, and other online sources. An RSS feed (also known as a web feed) allows publishers to automatically syndicate their web content. Each article on the feed usually includes a headline and summary along with a link to the article. By subscribing to a website’s RSS feed, you will receive timely news from it without having to manually search for what that site is publishing. For example, suppose you want to know when CTL publishes a new Tech Tip (and you don’t want to rely on the email announcement for it). You can subscribe to the Tech Tips RSS feed, and each time a new Tech Tip is published, it will appear in your feed. (Read on for more detailed instructions.)
This could save you a lot of time while enabling you to easily stay informed of the latest posts on websites you want to follow. Since you don’t have to join each site’s newsletter for updates, using RSS also ensures privacy.
How it works
In order to read RSS feeds, you will need a feed reader (also called news reader or news aggregator). The feed reader will maintain your list of web feeds and regularly check them for updates. You can then choose the content you want to view. The various kinds of feed readers are web-based, application-based, and email-based. There are also web-browsers with feed reader add-ons, plug-ins, and extensions. Some of the top rated readers include:
The feed readers are free, but additional services such as no advertisements, a customizable dashboard, unlimited web feed subscriptions, and access to social media feeds, require a paid subscription.
Once you have a feed reader of your choice you can subscribe to a site’s web feed by clicking on the site’s RSS icon or typing the site’s URL into the feed reader software or service.
By using the RSS tool, you can keep up with academic journals and publications. You can also stay abreast of the latest information from your department. To get started, subscribe to the Center for Teaching & Learning’s Announcements or Tech Tips feed.
