This workshop is completely asynchronous. Here is the syllabus. The key points are listed below.

We are offering two certifications – Full Teaching Online Certification and Emergency Teaching Online Certification.

Full Teaching Online Certification is offered both on the Blackboard and on the Google Classroom; Emergency Teaching Online Certification is only offered on the Blackboard.

Session 1Creating a welcoming online learning environment

Participants will

  • Read articles and watch videos about the importance of a creative, welcoming, and flexible online environment; theories of online education; teaching in the time of COVID-19;

  • Introduce themselves and meet their colleagues in Flipgrid;

  • Set up Blackboard/Google Classroom.

Session 2 – Structuring an online course and an effective syllabus

Participants will

Session 3 Developing online content

Participants will

  • Participate in a flipped classroom to learn more about it by using new technology tools called TedEd and Edpuzzle;

  • Learn how to record lectures using screen recording software;

  • Read articles on online pedagogy and strategies for teaching online;

  • Watch videos/listen to podcasts about teaching online;

  • Create a TedEd or Edpuzzle project;

  • Create online content in Blackboard/Google Classroom.

Session 4 Engaging students in an online environment

Participants will

  • Listen to a podcast on innovative ways to involve students and integrate technology into your courses;

  • Watch two short videos on engaging students in readings and micro-lectures and on planning and facilitating effective discussion, with recommendations followed by each video;

  • Set up discussion forums on Blackboard and in Google Classroom;

  • Set up a video discussion forum in Flipgrid.

Session 5 Online assessment

Participants will

  • Read articles about online assessments;

  • Explore a variety of online assessment tools;

  • Create assignments and quizzes on Blackboard/Google Classroom;

  • Deliver online presentations about their online course design.

Learning Outcomes

As participants in this workshop, faculty will be able to:

  1. offer a student-centered learning experience in an online learning environment;

  2. support students in achieving essential learning objectives creatively and flexibly;

  3. re-imagine face-to-face pedagogies and projects in an online environment;

  4. demonstrate competency in choosing and using digital tools for teaching remotely;

  5. design effective online learning activities that engage students in the learning process, and support the achievement of intended student learning outcomes;

Additional Information
  • This workshop will be offered on both Blackboard and Google Classroom. Participants may indicate their preference in the registration form below.

  • Participants can expect to spend about 25-30 hours working on asynchronous activities, but actual time may vary based on prior experience.

  • Upon successful completion* of this intensive workshop, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and compensation of $500 for their participation.

*Successful completion of the workshop includes completing all assigned workshop activities and participating in discussion forums, hands-on activities, and a syllabus draft.

  • Workshop participants will have access to sustained pedagogical advice and technical support from the Center for Teaching & Learning
